The activities I lose myself in are writing and playing guitar, but I must confess lately I haven’t been losing myself in the writing. I’ve been writing on deadline – several articles a week – for the weekly newspaper I work at as editor-in-chief, and besides an occasional album review for Americana Highways it’s been challenging for me to return to my novel and do other freelance projects, as I feel spent creatively. I can’t allow myself to stop doing what I love because my job is demanding. I used to journal a lot more, as well, and lose myself there. Same with guitar. If I just pick it up and play (instead of to rehearse or teach a lesson) it’s more liberating and more fun, so I pledge this morning to return to the page (and the guitar) in a way that sets me free.
